Overview
Our musical history continues to expand at a rapid pace. Aesthetic boundaries are stretched to their limits yet we must always question our compositional methods. Composition with technology is about understanding how it works and, most importantly, why it works.
Composition is about placing your aesthetic within a vibrant tradition and The University of Sheffield Sound Studios has a thriving community of budding composers. A PhD in Composition and Music Technology is increasingly popular as it affords an opportunity to develop a broad portfolio including compositions, installation art, visual music, software and a substantial written contextualisation (35-40K words).
The Centre for New Music at Sheffield (CeNMaS) aims to foster connections among composers, performers and audiences in Sheffield and beyond. CeNMaS is the focus for the large number of concerts, visiting lectures, residencies, symposia and festivals taking place at Sheffield throughout the academic calendar, including those hosted by the University of Sheffield Sound Studios (USSS), the Sheffield University New Music Ensemble and the Sound Laboratory Concerts Series.
